THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO GENEROUSLY DONATED TO THIS CAUSE. MODUS' CAMPAIGN IS NOW OVER BUT YOU CAN STILL DONATE VIA THE DTES-RESPONSE FUND-RAISING PAGE: THEY ARE DOING SOME FABULOUS WORK THAT IS WORTH SUPPORTING!
DTES Response is a coordinated effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the Downtown Eastside, where many people are at severe risk. Several community-serving agencies have now come together as “DTES Response” to ensure Covid-19 does not disproportionately affect the most vulnerable.
About 15,000 people are at risk in the DTES, 3000 of whom who are unhoused and 4700 of whom are at high risk in privately run SRO’s. Organizations in the DTES are now mobilizing resource, coordinating operations, and activating community networks to address the most urgent needs. the need is pressing:
"Every day, we work closely with members of the DTES community who are homeless or precariously housed, living on the streets, in tightly packed shelters, or in buildings with shared bathrooms and limited supplies for hand-washing and cleaning. Many of them rely on public spaces such as libraries, community centres, and drop-ins for safe shelter to access food, clothing, laundry services, and public bathrooms. Over the past few weeks, these spaces have been forced to close their doors and reduce their capacity in supporting (and safeguarding) the community. Because of this, we have seen large numbers of people being forced back onto the streets with nowhere to go and no way to ensure physical distancing. Staying close to one another is paramount to maintain their safety on the streets and it is unthinkable to ask people in such a precarious situation (and with no additional support) to isolate themselves." Open letter from Concerned registered nurses and frontline workers of the DTES.
As a mission-based Vancouver firm located close to the Downtown Eastside, MODUS feels a strong connection to the neighbourhood and wants to help. MODUS staff and principals have worked together over the last week to fundraise for the DTES Response campaign, and we have already hit $5,000. Now we're asking our friends and colleagues from the design, planning and engagement fields to join us in supporting this important campaign.
The funds raised will be sent to the Network of Inner City Community Services Society, which is receiving funds on behalf of DTES Response. NICCSS is a consortium of community based organizations, resident groups and consumer groups who work together in the coordination and delivery of services to children and families and individuals.
Wayblaze Crowdfunding is waiving their commission so that 100% of all donations will go to the DTES Response with the exception of a small fee charged by the credit card processing company.
