As part of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in 2012, an enormous outdoor installation of fish was constructed using discarded plastic bottles on Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The sculptures are illuminated from the inside at night creating a spectacular light show.
The three fish represent the importance of recycling and the risks that plastic bottles have on our natural environment, especially ocean dwelling animals. It is estimated that 60-80% of the debris in the ocean is from plastic products. The fish sculptures encourage people to rethink how they approach recycling and the need to protect our precious planet.
