La Maison William Notman in Montreal

Built in 1845, Notman House is a historic landmark property located in downtown Montreal. It has become a beacon to entrepreneurship, open collaboration and peer-to-peer learning.  In 2013, a local foundation developed a plan to purchase the building and renovate it to double the amount of office space for early stage Startups, double the capacity for the event space, and build a brand new, more accessible, fully functional cafe open to the public.  As a condition of the funding, they had to raise $1.1 million from private sources.  They raised $1 million for corporate donors but were still short $100,000.  They overcame this shortfall through a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised over $120,000 for 513 backers.
