About $2.5 million was raised from 11,000 backers (including 500 businesses) who collectively purchased 60,000 LED bulbs to light the High Level bridge in the centre of Edmonton. Impressively, citizens and business funded the entire amount, there was no need to request any funding from the City of Edmonton.
The lights are entirely programmable and are used to animate seasonal events like Easter, Canada Day, Halloween, Christmas Day, Edmonton Oilers PlayOff Game Days, and so on. The project was motivated as a way to reduce the high suicide rate on the bridge. Now that it is lit many more pedestrians cross the bridge.
