A group of residents in Victoria, called the Urban Liveability Committee, came up with the idea to build a community garden to serve the residents of Downtown Victoria. The biggest challenge was finding a site for the garden. With the involvement of a number of organizations, including the City of Victoria “Growing in the City” initiative, a site was secured at 1027 Yates Street in the spring of 2016. In the summer of 2016, 50 above-ground garden boxes were constructed. In November, the City provided a water supply line to the site so that the plantings could begin. This is a great example of how a group of engaged citizens with no official mandate can create positive change in their community.
