PARK(ing) Day is an internationally recognized event where parking spots in various cities and towns are transformed into pocket parks and parklets, once a year on the third Friday of September. It started in San Francisco in 2005 but has since spread around the world to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.
In September 2014, Nanaimo held its first PARK(ing) day event and six parklets were created by local organizations: https://www.nanaimo.ca/blog/nanaimo-park-ing-day
This idea is to provide funds for local organizations to create truly inspiring parklets for the next PARK(ing) day.
