Create “laneways for living”

This idea is to identify an alley way that is largely unused near a high traffic area and, with local government approval, convert it into a “place for living” with street furniture made out of scrap wood or pallets, plants in reclaimed wood planter boxes, paint on the ground to divide the area and create activities (e.g. hopscotch grid, chess board, labyrinth), etc. This kind of public amenity will transform places that people normally avoid to ones that they are attracted to and want to linger in and shift the priority from cars to people.

This idea can be implemented by a team of volunteers in a single weekend with $5,000 to $10,000 for materials, night-time lighting, inviting entrance structures, and perhaps a pop-up container cafe.
