While we collect a large amount of information about many aspects of our water systems in Canada, there are still many important gaps. For example, it is still very difficult to get a clear answer on whether we are managing our groundwater supplies in BC on a truly sustainable basis such that, on average across the province, our groundwater supplies are not experiencing a gradual depletion. As another example, it is hard to get objective facts about whether fracking techniques in the oil and gas industry are having a material negative impact on water quality. It is very hard to make good water management decisions without accurate water management data.
